Chapter Five

Clayton made his way into Emrys Hall through one of the side doors that lead directly to a stairwell. After four days of almost nonstop hounding, Clayton was learning all kinds of ways to get around campus while avoiding as many people as possible. Stopping unmolested in front of Syralis's office, Clayton took a deep breath. He couldn't wait to see what was in store for him today.

As soon as he saw what was on the other side of the door, his jaw dropped. He took a step back, checking to see that he hadn't opened the wrong door by mistake. When it was clear he was in the right place, he turned his attention to the room in front of him.

Gone was the room full of books and art, fireplace blazing. Instead there was a cavernous chamber, large enough that Clayton couldn't see the walls or the ceiling, although free-floating balls of fire illuminated the room. Coins covered every inch he could see of the floor. Smatterings of gemstones glittered in the firelight, flashes of color in a sea of gold. The treasure carpeting the floor rose into a mound several yards in front of him. The figure sprawled across it left Clayton breathless.

The scales were an iridescent blue, the same color as his hair in his other form. The dragon's massive head was resting on one of his front feet, the large, spiked frill reminding Clayton of a triceratops. The long tail crossed the entire expanse of space between them with the end of it resting a few feet from Clayton.

Syralis, in his true form. He was even more impressive and beautiful than Clayton had imagined. His power filled the room, and Clayton could feel the heat pouring off him even from the doorway. Looking at him now, Clayton wasn't certain whether it was safe to enter. Syralis had never seemed more dangerous than he did in this moment.

Clayton wondered what it would be like to touch him. Would the scales be as smooth and silky as they were in his other form? He wanted to feel that heat up close, to curl up next to him, resting his back along Syralis's broad side, feeling the rise and fall of his massive chest as he had that first day.

One eye slid lazily open, the dragon's familiar orange gaze resting on Clayton. The shade of his irises shifted closer to yellow even as Clayton watched.

"I can come back later, if you'd like," Clayton offered, disappointment welling up even as he said the words. Still, the last thing he wanted was to disrupt Syralis's rest.

Syralis's tail rose and fell before settling to curve behind Clayton.

Clayton grinned. That was all the invitation he needed. Adjusting his grip on his bag, Clayton closed his eyes and took a deep breath, bracing himself. He crossed the threshold.

The rush of magic was no less heady than it had been the first time, and Clayton stumbled. Before he could right himself, however, Syralis shifted. Coins and jewels cascaded from the mound as the dragon stood.
